Dashain and Tihar flights from New Zealand: when to book

By Quick Trips · Updated 12 October 2026 · 4 min read

Colourful prayer flags above a golden stupa in Nepal

For many Nepali families in New Zealand, Dashain and Tihar are the two trips of the year that matter most. They are also the hardest to book at the last minute. Here is how to plan, whether you are travelling this year or looking ahead to the next.

In shortDashain and Tihar flights fill early and fares tend to rise as seats go. If your dates are firm, ask for a quote as soon as you can. If they are flexible, tell us the window. And if you’re short of time, message us on WhatsApp: availability changes daily.

When are Dashain and Tihar?

Both festivals follow the Nepali lunar calendar, so the dates move every year. They usually fall between October and November, with Dashain first and Tihar a few weeks later. Check the exact dates for your year before you choose flights.

Dashain and Tihar in 2026Vijaya Dashami, the main day of Dashain, falls on 21 October 2026, and Laxmi Puja, the main day of Tihar, is around 8 November. The dates come from the Nepali calendar (patro), so confirm the exact days before you book. Looking ahead? Start asking about next year’s dates early: flights for the festival weeks are among the first to fill.

Why flights fill early

  • Families time their trips for the same few days, so demand arrives all at once.
  • Many people need to line up annual leave, school holidays or time off study.
  • Group travel, such as parents with children or several relatives, needs more seats together.

A simple plan

  • Confirm your leave dates. Know the earliest you can leave and the latest you can return.
  • Decide what is fixed. Which dates must you be in Nepal, and which can move?
  • Ask for a quote with a window. “Leaving between these dates” often shows better options than one fixed day.
  • Check your documents. Make sure your passport is valid for your trip, and read the entry rules on the official Nepal Department of Immigration site.
  • Book once you’re confident. Waiting for a price drop on peak dates is a gamble.

Travelling with family

Tell us who is travelling, including children and infants, so we can check seats together and the right fare for each passenger. If you are carrying gifts and food home, mention how much. Extra baggage is easier to plan for before you pay than at the airport.

Returning to New Zealand after the festivals

Flights back to New Zealand are busy in the weeks after Tihar and again around the December holidays. If you are already planning your trip home, choose your return date at the same time, or ask about a flexible return. If your plans are last minute
