Auckland to Colombo and beyond
Sri Lanka’s main international airport serves Colombo, and from New Zealand you’ll connect at least once, commonly via Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or Australia. The connection you choose shapes the price, the total travel time and the baggage you can carry.
Searching for NZ to Sri Lanka flights? The cheapest flights to Sri Lanka usually come from flexible dates, a longer layover or travelling outside April, May and Christmas, and the AKL to CMB (Auckland to Colombo) route is the one most families use. Whatever you find online, we compare it for the same dates and show the full price and baggage.
See our Auckland to Colombo page for how that route works in practice. Bringing parents or relatives to New Zealand? We also book Colombo to Auckland from our Auckland office.
Seasons and festivals
Many families travel for Sinhala and Tamil New Year in April, for Vesak in May, or over Christmas and New Year, so these dates fill early. For beach weather, the south-west coast is generally driest from about December to March and the east coast from roughly April to September, though conditions vary.
Before you fly
Most visitors need an online Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before arriving. Apply only through the official site and check current rules for your passport.
Flights to Sri Lanka: your questions
Are there direct flights from New Zealand to Sri Lanka?
No. Expect at least one stop, commonly in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or Australia.
Which airport do I fly into?
Most international flights land at Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) in Katunayake, about an hour north of central Colombo.
Do I need a visa?
Most visitors need an online ETA in advance. Check the official site for the current requirements for your passport.
When is the cheapest time to fly?
It varies by date and airline. Peak periods such as April, May and the Christmas holidays are usually dearer. Tell us your flexibility and we’ll compare.
