Getting from New Zealand to the Maldives
Every itinerary connects at least once. The most common stops are Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Colombo and the Gulf hubs, with others via Australia. The journey usually takes more than a day door to door, and the layover length changes the price and the time more than anything else.
International flights land at Velana International Airport (MLE), on an island next to Malé. Most resorts are reached by speedboat, seaplane or a short domestic flight, which is usually arranged with the resort, so allow for it when you plan your arrival and departure times.
When to go
The Maldives is warm all year. It is generally driest and sunniest from about December to April, with more rain and wind from about May to October, though conditions vary. New Zealand’s Christmas and school holidays fall in the drier season, so flights and resorts fill early and fares usually rise.
Before you fly
Many visitors can get a tourist visa on arrival, but rules depend on your passport. You generally need a confirmed onward or return ticket and an accommodation booking, and an online arrival declaration may be required. Check the official Maldives Immigration site before you travel. This is general information, not immigration advice.
